DAF Truck Manufacturing Ships in Major Supply Chain Improvements (video)

Play Video »

DAF TrucksDAF Trucks is one of the leading truck manufacturers in Western Europe, holding 12% market share. This is due to their commitment to customer satisfaction and ability to quickly produce a custom built truck in just six weeks. Customers are offered 1,000 different options to choose from, which means that DAF always has a massive amount of parts and components in their facility.

Jac Van Orsouw, a technology consultant for DAF Trucks, says, "If you want to build trucks in six weeks, you have to have your supplies in the right order, on time, and in place. The whole logistic process is very tight, there's no slack anywhere. So, you need good equipment and good processes to have those things done."

DAF was using a large amount of paper with their central mainframe application and logistics process. This proved to be very inefficient, so they decided a long-term solution was needed to digitalize their processes and eliminate paper consumption. They simply needed a more efficient way to do their logistic and building process. They also needed “a supplier who was constant in delivery, up to date with technology, [and] must be fast with delivery of the equipment.”

Intermec bar code scanners, handheld computers, forklift mounted computers, and many other data capture devices are now used in DAF facilities. They expect to integrate RFID in the near future.
